The production of plastic bottles is carried out in stages. Typically, plastic bottles for drinking water and other beverages are made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) because the material is both strong and light. In order to understand the manufacturing process, it is helpful to first check the composition of the PET and its effect on the Pet Preform.
PET is a thermoplastic polymer that can be either opaque or transparent, depending on the specific material composition. Like most plastics, PET is produced from petroleum hydrocarbons by the reaction between ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. To produce plastic bottles, PET is first polymerized to produce long molecular chains.
Polymerization itself can be a complex process and leads to many inconsistencies between one batch of manufactured PET and another batch of manufactured PET. Usually, two impurities are produced during the polymerization: diethylene glycol and acetaldehyde. Although the production of diethylene glycol is generally not high enough to affect PET, acetaldehyde can be produced not only during the polymerization process, but also during the bottle manufacturing process. The large amount of acetaldehyde used in the manufacture of bottles in PET can give strange taste to the interior of the beverage.
Once the plastic preform is manufactured, the bottle manufacturing process can begin. To ensure that the PET is suitable for use, extensive testing was performed after manufacture to check if the bottle was not penetrated by carbon dioxide (this is important for bottles with soda). Other factors such as transparency, gloss, chip resistance, thickness and pressure resistance are also carefully monitored.
